I think that the game play could actually use some work. In The Banner Saga you challenge your foes in a turn based tactics battle field. The complexity of this tactic system is limited in my opinion. There are no advantages on attack based on ones location on the battle field. There is no height advantage for elevations, no change in attack due to frontal, rear or side attacks. No advantages related to elemental strengths or weaknesses. Nothing in relation to piercing weapons versus slashing weapons. The list goes on. The battles are pretty straight forwards and winning is determined by utilizing the few skills that you team does have. Each character has a passive and an active skill that they can use.
This lack of diversity on the battlefield is mirrored in the character building portion of the game as well. A player can level up 4 times based on the number of kills he or she has earned and the amount of renown (experience) accrued from battle. Leveling up increases your active ability and allows two points to be used on your 5 element talent tree. Its more of a talent line since it does not branch off and all characters have the same set of attributes that they can level up. There may be many reasons for keeping the simplistic battle system. One could argue that the challenge is in the simplicity. It is more like a chess match this way. Another argument is that it will attract more players that are interested in the phenomenal story and less interested in the game play. I think that this was definitely their thought since they allow the user to adjust the difficulty at anypoint throughout the game. This allows the story motivated people to breeze through the battles and the hardcore gamers to test their mettle on a higher difficulty.
Now that I made it sound like this game sucks, let's get to what makes this game utterly phenomenal. The animation is incredible. Watch my YouTube review or go buy the game to see how stunning the 2D animation is in this game. It is used in cut scenes as well as in the actual battles. The color and style are beautiful and really set the tone for this game.
Tying the beautiful visuals and captivating story together is a soundtrack that will blow you away. The sound track and sound effects complete this circle of perfection and truly draw you in to the world of The Banner Saga. If you are smart enough to own a record player you can pick up the vinyl version of the soundtrack here. Slap on your headphones and be prepared to be transported into another world.
The game is available on computer, PS4 and Xbox and you're an idiot if you don't pick it up and play it. If you are looking for phenomenal game play than maybe try another tactics game but if you like an appealing story, beautiful animations and heart melting music, then play this game.
